Call for application for an expert for a Reporting Manual development

Context

Internews seeks a consultant to develop and tailor an inclusive reporting manual focused on the skills needed by independent media outlets to raise public awareness and advocate for fact-based, high-quality reporting on issues affecting marginalized racial and ethnic communities and underrepresented groups, Fact-checking, reporting on rights issues affecting marginalized communities, gender-sensitive reporting, and avoiding stereotypes will be among the topics covered.

 

Project background

TAWASOL is a project implemented by Internews that aims to create a more inclusive Tunisian society for marginalized racial and ethnic communities and underrepresented and vulnerable groups by countering discrimination and promoting greater diversity in media coverage. 

 

Objectives

The consultant will develop a reporting manual to:

  • Improved knowledge and skills of media outlets in reporting on rights issues affecting marginalized communities.
  • Adoption of inclusive reporting practices and reduced stereotyping in media coverage.
  • Increased production of high-quality content reflecting the needs and concerns of marginalized communities.
  • Strengthened network between media outlets and CSOs promoting diverse voices and perspectives.

 

Deliverable

The TAWASOL Reporting Manual should be a comprehensive and accessible resource in Arabic designed to empower journalists and content creators with the necessary skills and ethical considerations for reporting in the context of countering discrimination and promoting diversity in Tunisian media. It should: 

  • Provide practical guidance with real-world examples, case studies, and checklists to help journalists apply the principles outlined in their reporting practices. 
  • Include exercises, handouts, and multimedia to engage participants and reinforce learnings.
  • Provide links to additional resources, templates, and toolkits that journalists can refer to for in-depth exploration of specific topics or skills.
  • Offer practical tools for journalists to identify, counter, and responsibly report on mis- and disinformation.
  • Advance and strengthen journalists’ skills on fact-checking procedures and emphasize the importance of accurate reporting
  • Offer guidance on avoiding stereotypes and promoting inclusivity in reporting on marginalized communities.
  • Empower journalists to approach stories from a human rights perspective, ensuring fairness and justice.
  • Provide ethical guidelines for reporting on marginalized racial and ethnic communities and underrepresented and vulnerable groups, especially black Tunisians, and Sub-Saharan migrants.
  • Include training materials and resources to enhance journalists’ skills in covering rights-related issues impacting the mentioned target group.
  • Provide guidance on adapting reporting for various platforms, ensuring consistent and responsible storytelling across media.
  • Provide guidance on handling sensitive information responsibly and ethically.
  • Include training on recognizing and responsibly handling hate speech and discriminatory content.

 

Requirements

  • Graduate degree in media studies, communications, or related field
  • 5+ years’ experience developing training programs and materials
  • Previous experience designing media literacy curriculum
  • Extensive knowledge of critical media literacy frameworks and concepts
  • Extensive knowledge and background on inclusive reporting and working with marginalized racial and ethnic communities and underrepresented and vulnerable groups, especially black Tunisians, and Sub-Saharan migrants.
  • Experience in working with marginalized groups and minorities is preferred
  • Exceptional analytical and writing skills in Arabic& English
  • Ability to analyze complex media content from various sources, including content creators.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines

Timeline

The consultant will be hired for 12 working days to complete the reporting manual. The exact scope of work and timeline will be discussed and agreed upon with the Internews team.
