Job Title:                                              EducationUSA Advisor for Libya

Position Classification:                         Full-time

OVERVIEW:

The Advisor provides information to the public about U.S. higher education at accredited undergraduate, graduate or other institutions in the U.S.  The advisor offers free, unbiased advice to the public on the admissions process, financial aid, intercultural issues, logistics and other topics as required and appropriate.  The Advisor also manages the day-to-day activities of the Competitive College Club and coordinates with the American Corner Coordinator. The position requires excellent interpersonal and presentation skills in English and Arabic, as well as strong administrative follow-up. International training and travel are necessary.  EducationUSA is administered under a grant from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to promote higher education and study opportunities in the United States.

TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Tasks and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Work with public and private academic institutions and organizations to distribute information about scholarships and exchange programs;
  • Maintain close contact with the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Embassy, and the Regional Educational Advising Coordinator (REAC) on the administration of all programs and outreach;
  • Ensure that all AMIDEAST and EducationUSA rules and regulations are being followed and implemented;
  • Manage day-to-day activities including:
    • Advise individuals seeking guidance and information on studying in the U.S.;
    • Manage an advising calendar and maintain a social media presence;
    • Conduct group orientation sessions at AMIDEAST and at other locations for the public, and conduct individual consultations;
    • Respond to inquiries from e-mail and walk-ins regarding the American educational system, application procedures to U.S. universities, and other EducationUSA services;
    • Coordinate speakers, produce materials, update presentation information, and promote the annual pre-departure orientations that are held for students preparing to travel to the U.S.;
    • Maintain the advising section at the American Corner in Tunis with up-to-date materials, books, and promotional brochures as well as computer/internet access for students to do online research.
    • Continually update the EducationUSA Website and database
    • Compile monthly reports and statistics for review and submission to the Regional Advising Coordinator and the Advising team at AMIDEAST HQ.
  • Develop and implement annual advising and outreach plans, including developing and monitoring program budgets;
  • Manage the Competitive College Club “CCC” reaching out to Libyan high schools and students, in person and/or virtually;
  • Conduct Monthly webinars with students in other regions of Libya by using the NewRow webinar platform.
    • Identify, select and coach eligible and promising scholars for scholarships and advise them as they apply to U.S. institutions
  • Manage various US government grants including the tracking of funds and quarterly reporting;
  • Correspond with AMIDEAST Headquarters or other involved parties when necessary;
  • Cooperate with the Exchange Program Manager and the American Corner Coordinator;
  • Support and contribute to events for the annual International Education Week;
  • Serve as a liaison with the U.S. Embassy Consular Office regarding student visa sessions and other outreach activities;
  • Coordinate with U.S. university representatives and local schools to help representatives recruit students from Libya and assist them in the set-up of appointments at local high schools and universities;
  • Represent the EducationUSA network and AMIDEAST as needed at conferences and workshops;
  • Train and supervise an EducationUSA Intern when needed;

 

Critères d'éligibilité

  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, such as education, humanities, human resources, business administration, or other;
  • Minimum 1-year experience in the US academic environment;
  • OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved;
  • Fluency in English and Arabic;
  • Excellent record keeping and report writing;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Arabic
  • Thorough knowledge of the Libyan education and higher education systems
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and presentation skills;
  • Availability to travel domestically and internationally;
  • Competency in using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Customer service and public relations skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with all people including those from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.
  • Attentiveness to detail and consistent follow-through.
  • An ability to take initiative and work effectively without close supervision.
  • The capacity to motivate professional peers and support staff, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with them.
  • Excellent oral and written communications.
  • Ability to balance sensitive political and cultural issues
  • Ability to develop a broad base of working relationships from the education, civil society and government and private sectors.
  • Collaborative, team oriented approach to work.
  • Strong support for AMIDEAST’s mission.
  • A masters degree in a relevant field from a U.S. or foreign university; (preferred)
  • Experience in U.S. education systems through a US government scholarship or exchange program.(preferred)
  • Proficiency in written and spoken French (preferred)
