The Tunisia Office of The Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University organizes a panel discussion on “Heritage Revival in The Medina of Tunis”.

The speakers on this panel are: Leila Ben Gacem (Ashoka Fellow, cultural entrepreneur, founder of Dar el-Harka, Dar Ben-Gacem and Sougha), Anas Ghrab (Assistant Professor in Musicology at the University of Sousse. Former Director of the Center of Arab and Mediterranean Music), Emna Mizouni (Co-Founder of Association Carthagina) and Zeineb Madiouni (Co-founder of Journal de la Medina). A welcoming and introductory word will be given by Pr. William Granara (Director of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University). The panel will be moderated by Sihem Lamine (Office Manager of CMES Tunisia).
The panelists will present projects and research work they are currently conducting in the Medina in order to re-inject life, engage public interest and re-energize a heritage under threat of deterioration and loss. Their experiences show individual, inclusive and participative initiatives run with the contribution of the Medina communities. These projects share a common challenge: They operate within an institutional vacuum caused by the meager resources allocated to heritage preservation by decision makers. They also share a common goal: To ignite a positive impact by leading creative and inspiring actions that stem from local resources.
