Dr. Lamia Ben Youssef will examine the history of Arab and Black relations in the United States from antebellum America, through Arab immigration between 1870 and 1924, the Civil Rights Movement, the Algerian Revolution, until the George Floyd Tragedy. Special emphasis will be given to the significance of “Black” and “Arab” in Western and Arabic theories of race.
MORE ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dr. Lamia Ben Youssef is an Associate Professor in Arabic Studies and Department Head of Foreign Languages at Birmingham-Southern College in Alabama. She holds a BA from the Ecole Normale Superieure of Sousse, Tunisia and a Masters and a PhD in English from Michigan State University. Her research projects focus on the Maghreb, gender studies, post-colonialism, translation, and teaching foreign languages. Dr. Ben Youssef received her Fulbright scholarship to pursue her doctoral studies at Michigan State University.
