The Leaders for Democracy Fellowship, funded by the U.S.-Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) and implemented by World Learning, is a leadership development program to advance civic engagement and social innovation in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

The Leaders for Democracy Fellowship provides emerging leaders across sectors in the MENA region with an in-depth academic and practical opportunity to analyze complex challenges, re-examine interventions to address these challenges, and seek ways to make positive social and economic changes in societies and communities by advancing existing activities or launching new initiatives.

The Leaders for Democracy Fellowship supports cadres of professionals with proven leadership abilities who are actively engaged in civic engagement and socially innovative activities, can work in a cross-cultural setting, have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and can be committed to the full program and follow-on activities. Emerging leaders with an established track record in civic engagement and social innovation are encouraged to apply.

Pre-Program Phase        : 3 Months

Program Locations and 2019 Dates

  • The Lebanon Arabic program is designed for high-proficiency Arabic speakers. It will take place between July and October 2019 in Beirut, Lebanon
  • The U.S. English program is designed for highproficiency English speakers. It will take place between July and October 2019 in Durham, North Carolina and Washington, D.C.
  • The Leaders for Democracy Fellowship will cover the cost of international and domestic travel, lodging, and health insurance, and provide a modest living stipend to cover meals and incidentals during the program.

Program Activities

Academic Coursework : (4 weeks)

Program Activities Fellows will attend an intensive graduate-level academic training focused on civic engagement and social innovation at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon or Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

Professional Practicum: (8 weeks)

Fellows will participate in additional skill-building andenrichment seminars, and engage in internships at non-governmental or public policy organizations that align with their backgrounds and interests.

Critères d'éligibilité

  • Age: be between 28 and 35 years old.
  • Professional Experience: have at least five years of professional work experience.
  • Civic Engagement and Social Innovation Experience: have at least three years of experience working in civic engagement and social innovation activities.
  • Academic Background: have a bachelor’s degree.
  • Full Language Fluency: be able to function comfortably in the official language of the program's academic and professional environments, which is Arabic for the Lebanon-based program and English for the U.S.- based program.
  • have the capacity and commitment to apply the leadership development experience gained through the program upon returning to their home country.
