Master Overview

The Arab Master in Democracy and Human Rights is a unique programme designed to meet the needs of students, professionals and experts who want to deepen their knowledge and develop their skills in the field of democratic governance and human rights in the Middle East and North Africa. It is part of the Global Campus of Regional masters in Human Rights and Democracy supported by the European Union.

Our aim is to support the next generation of experts, academics and practitioners and to give them the practical experience needed for building up their professional career and academic activities.

Introduction

The Arab Master in Democracy and Human Rights is supported by a growing network of partner universities from the region and beyond. The partnership is composed of the following academic institutions:

  • Saint Joseph University (Lebanon) as the coordinating University (Lebanon),
  • Birzeit University (Palestine),
  • International University of Rabat (Morocco),
  • University of Carthage (Tunisia)

The University of Jordan (Jordan) and the University of Cairo (Egypt) are currently in the process of joining ARMA.

WHAT

The Arab Master in Democracy and Human Rights is:

  • An intensive advanced course in the field of democracy and human rights;
  • A Master’s Degree (60 ECTS) from Saint Joseph University in cooperation with the partner universities;
  • An intensive learning combined with an action and policy-oriented approach;
  • Comprised of two semesters: one in Beirut and the other in a participating university;
  • A supervised Master’s thesis in one of the partner universities;
  • The foundation for a successful career on national, international, and non-governmental levels.

WHO

Our international academic staff brings together professors, experts and practitioners coming from over 10 countries and sharing with students their knowledge, professional experience and expertise.

Our programme attracts students who are interested in understanding regional dynamics and country-specific socio-political trends across the Middle East and North Africa. It is also geared to professionals who want to back their experience in development, democratisation and human rights with solid scholarship.

 WHY

ARMA includes research-oriented courses and practical trainings in the field of human rights and democratisation. It attracts students, researchers and experts from the region and beyond, because of its comparative approach and its interdisciplinary character.

It offers cross-regional mobility, with one semester in Beirut (Lebanon), and another in one of the following universities: Birzeit University (Palestine), International University of Rabat (Morocco) and University of Carthage (Tunisia).

You will acquire theoretical and practical knowledge and insights into the region and the master’s main thematics. The programme allows you to develop research and practical skills. It includes a week-long field trip and offers you the possibility of doing internships in leading national and international organisations across the region.

ARMA is a unique learning experience, rich in interdisciplinary content and academic activities and field-related work. It allows you to develop long-term relations across the region and beyond.

WHEN and WHERE

The programme consists of two semesters:

The first Semester
From September to January. It is comprised of four modules and takes place at Saint Joseph University in Beirut (2017-2018).

The Second Semester
From February to May, students are assigned to one of the partner universities. The second semester programme includes: lectures or seminars in their host universities and completion of dissertations which could be based on field and Internship work.

Tuition Fees and Grants

The amount of the tuition fee for the academic year 2017/2018 is 4000 Euros for both semesters.

ARMA offers financial support in the form of a partial contribution towards living expenses and/or a full or partial tuition waiver. This type of financial support is awarded to a limited number of students on the basis of academic achievement, need and geographical distribution.

Furthermore, all participants will be supported with finding accommodation and with administrative procedures for getting the visa.

Successful applicants will receive a letter of admission and will be requested to pay the fees upon acceptance of the offer. Payments can be made via bank transfer. 

 

Critères d'éligibilité

  • Applicants must have a minimum of 240 ECTS (MA degree, or a BA degree with an additional 60 master-level European credits ,or their equivalent). Degrees should be in political science, law, any other social science or specialisation in a relevant discipline.
  • Additional studies and practical experience in the area of human rights in inter-governmental, governmental, or non-governmental organisations are a plus.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English are a must.
