JOB PURPOSE:

To develop and support effective action on behalf of individuals and communities, including those at immediate risk and over the longer term, through the development of campaign plans and techniques, preparation of relevant materials, appropriate communications and advice to others in the International Secretariat and national sections.

DEPARTMENT PURPOSE:

To develop, coordinate, programme and lead on delivery of AI’s global campaigns; to coordinate and deliver campaign work on behalf of individuals at risk; to increase campaign effectiveness across the IS and the AI movement.

AIIS PURPOSE:

The IS, which operates from a number of sites around the world, gathers and communicates accurate and action-oriented human rights information globally. We campaign for meaningful human rights change; enable effective human rights activism and work to persuade governments and other actors to uphold universal human rights standards. We provide strategic leadership, support and advice to the AI movement globally, fostering AI’s contribution, presence and public accountability throughout the world.

Other key relationships: Regional Research & Campaign teams; Editorial, digital, media, fundraising, global campaigns and policy teams in the International Secretariat (London and regional offices). Staff and activists in national sections.

Useful information: Work with and for individuals constitutes the backbone of AI’s research, campaigning, activism, promotional, educational and fundraising work. The cross-disciplinary Individuals at Risk team works with others across the International Secretariat to ensure the development and coordination of a strategic, sustainable body of casework for effective action and manages reactive work for individuals at immediate risk, including financial assistance for individuals at risk; ensures work with and for individuals coherently encompasses functions of research, policy development, campaigning, activism, communications, mobilization and fundraising; ensures the work is guided by ethical best practice and recognizes the individual as an agent of change; develops organizational capacity and competencies; and ensures work with and for individuals is appropriately included in our campaigns and other country, theme and crisis response work.

Six members of the team work to the Job Description set out here, five of which focusing on a specific world region and one on a global function. On-going and day-to-day lead responsibilities across the tasks below will be shared across the team according to need & capacity.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • In collaboration with regional, campaign and other IS teams, develop and manage an effective portfolio of casework for campaigning (usually 40-60 long-term cases on a range of human rights issues, as delegated, at any given time) [for regional IAR campaigner only]
    • Identify new short, medium and long-term cases for campaigning, within continent X
    • Develop and advise on appropriate case strategies in line with agreed policies and guidelines, contributing to the development of new techniques or systems for casework
    • Ensure that all case information across delegated portfolio is accurate and up-to-date by undertaking the regular review, monitoring, evaluation and impact assessment of casework
  • Deliver effective & ethical campaigning with and for individuals, communities and HRDs at risk
    • Lead and/or participate in regional and global campaigning projects, such as the annual Letter Writing Marathon, collaborating with sub-regional staff & sections across [the Continent] to identify and implement opportunities for innovative and effective campaign actions
    • Assemble motivating and clear ‘casefiles’ for campaigning, seeking advice from policy, legal or other specialist staff as required
    • Work with sections [across Continent X] to support campaigning, coordinate appropriate levels and forms of activism and to ensure sections provide adequate feedback [for regional IAR campaigner only]
  • Support 24/7 mobilization and response for individuals, communities and HRDs at imminent risk
    • Work with sub-regional research and campaigns staff to produce clear, targeted and motivating Urgent Actions and to distribute them efficiently [for regional IAR campaigner only]
    • Develop and support the UA and other activist networks across [Continent X] and contribute to global UA development strategies and plans
    • Support the development of new tools and techniques for 24/7 urgent response to individuals at immediate risk
  • Ensure effective communication for and about AI’s individuals work
    • Work with communications and media staff to produce materials that support campaign objectives on cases; assist communications staff in identifying appropriate case information for other AI communications activities
    • Maintain and develop information management & communication systems, including Intranet databases and shared project management or communications tools
    • With other members of the team, handle enquiries from the IS, sections, NGOs & activists and represent AI as appropriate to individuals and other organizations
    • Prepare other public and internal materials to support campaigning on individuals, including case updates, newsletters, web content and on-line actions
  • Provide authoritative advice and training to staff in the IS and sections on effective and ethical casework and case campaigning techniques such as Urgent Actions
    • Prepare guidelines and other materials to support IS & sections’ campaigning with and for individuals and contribute to the development and implementation of training and capacity building programmes
  • Participate in collectively coordinating the work of the team, preparing work plans, setting priorities, monitoring progress, ensuring mutual support and accountability, identifying training and development needs
  • Perform all necessary administrative tasks to ensure effective self-servicing, participate in the recruitment and induction of new staff and consultants and perform other corporate tasks as appropriate
  • Coordinate and support the UA and IAR section and structure networks, coordinate financial processing for IAR team projects and maintain records of all budget expenditure and assist in the development & maintenance of internal communications tools and channels, such as AI’s intranet, email lists, newsletters and IAR Portfolio [for IAR global campaigner only]
  • With the Global Relief Coordinator, support regional offices across the Continent to ensure that applications for financial Relief, whether originated by the IS or by national sections, are vetted appropriately and to all agreed organizational ethical standards and legal standards; and that appropriate consultation has taken place with stakeholders within and outside the organization, as appropriate

WHAT DOES SUCCESS LOOK LIKE IN THIS JOB?

  • The ‘portfolio’ of cases falling under the responsibility of the postholder is well-managed, has clear strategies, is updated, accessible and contains motivating information
  • Urgent actions produced by the postholder on behalf of those at immediate risk are well-written and have targeted, motivating appeals
  • Current and motivating information on individuals campaigning is available for development/use by communications staff across the IS and sections across a range of channels and platforms
  • Sections have the information and materials they need to support effective campaigning on the case
  • IS and section staff and volunteers across the Continent are supported with guidance materials, advice and training on ethical, creative and effective IAR campaigning as needed
  • Global campaigning projects on Individuals at Risk, such as the Letter Writing Marathon, are properly coordinated and delivered

ABOUT YOU: 

You will be confident in developing and managing an effective portfolio of casework for campaigning and deliver these in an ethical way. You will be highly motivational and have experience in mobilizing individuals, communities and human rights defenders at imminent risk. Your confidence and expertise to identify relevant information quickly, understand what’s key and pinpoint the most effective means of communication will provide authoritative advice and support to staff. Flexible enough to adapt your approach as priorities change, you will also bring us a real flair for innovation and will act as a reliable post within the organisation. Fluency in written and spoken Arabic, French and English is a must.
