Everyone is invited and highly encouraged to participate in the important discussion focused on racism in Tunisia with guests Jamila Debech, Khaled Dabaabi, and Huda mzioudet. The discussion will begin at 16:00 and will focus specficially on the social, economic, and political status of the black community in Tunisia.
Black Tunisians — whether descendants of slaves, indigenous peoples or immigrants — have always lived on the margins of Tunisian society. Even though slavery was abolished in Tunisia in 1846 (a decision that was reaffirmed in 1890), the image and status of black people, or rather the way the Tunisian people perceive them, has remained intact.
“But what sets Tunisia apart from other countries is the fact that racism, though clearly evident at almost every level of society, is rarely, if ever, publicly acknowledged. In Tunisia, racism is shrouded in a blanket of denial that rarely permits anyone to see it with clarity.”- By Nada Issa (filmmaker).
